Program History

Since 2007, the ICSLD has convened scholars from around the world to study and explore issues of civic life. Previous ICSLD institutes have been facilitated by Peter Levine and Karol Soltan at Tufts University 2009-2018, and also in Germany and Ukraine from 2015-2019, facilitated by Tetyana Hoggan-Kloubert bringing together more than 300 participants.

Program History

10-day residential retreat (December 4-13, 2026) held in Augsburg, Germany. This retreat includes in-classroom workshops on key civic ideas and institutional civic missions, alongside relevant historical excursions. Visits include the Dachau concentration camp, the Nazi Propaganda Museum, and the Nuremberg War Trials Museum.

Quarterly 2-day workshops hosted at partner institutions (e.g., NC State University, James Madison University). Each workshop focuses on a specific theme, providing relevant theory, research, and time for group planning and discussions..

 Fellows also receive responsive mentorship through monthly online meetings and on-demand accessibility to higher education leaders experienced in establishing institutional structures to promote civic learning and engagement.

In addition to joining the established international ICSLD network, this cohort of Fellows and ICSLD facilitators will cultivate a lasting community of practice to provide ongoing mutual support and collaboration.

Through a combination of internal and external funding, the ICSLD subsidizes the majority of program costs. To demonstrate institutional commitment, applicants are required to secure internal support for travel-related expenses and a $3,000 program fee.

For best consideration, apply by June 30, 2026. Decisions will be announced by late July 2026.
